In a surprising yet impressive comeback, Disney's first R-rated Marvel movie takes over the top position, outperforming new releases and affirming the studio's stronghold on the summer box office.

AceShowbiz - In a sleepy box office weekend, holdovers proved their staying power as newcomers failed to make a splash. "Deadpool & Wolverine" reclaimed the top spot for the fifth consecutive weekend, bringing in $18.3 million and surpassing $1.2 billion worldwide.
The Walt Disney Company continued its dominance, with its latest release, "Alien: Romulus", following closely behind "Deadpool & Wolverine". The movie raked in $16.2 million in its second weekend, bringing its total earnings to over $225 million globally. Disney's "Inside Out 2" maintained its position, earning $2.1 million domestically in its 11th weekend.
"It Ends With Us", another repeat performer, held its ground in third place with $11.9 million. The Sony movie, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, has now grossed over $242 million worldwide on a budget of just $25 million.
New releases faced fierce competition in the crowded market, resulting in "box office deja vu," according to analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Blink Twice", directed by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum, had a modest opening with $7.3 million, taking fourth place. The psychological thriller follows billionaire Slater King (Tatum) as he whisks two women away to his private island.
Rounding out the top five was "The Forge", a faith-based coming-of-age drama about a young man finding his way through Christianity. The film opened with $6.6 million and received an A+ CinemaScore.
Another new release, "The Crow", and "Twisters" failed to crack the top five, falling behind "Coraline" in the rankings. "Twisters" entered its sixth week with $6.2 million in domestic earnings, while "Coraline", re-released for its 15th anniversary, brought in an additional $5.1 million.
Despite the dominance of holdovers, Dergarabedian predicts that the upcoming Labor Day holiday will provide a boost to newer titles as word-of-mouth spreads and more people head to theaters.
