AceShowbiz - Lionsgate's highly anticipated reboot of "The Crow" is struggling to take flight, much to the disappointment of its creators and fans alike. The film currently holds a measly 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as "dreary and poorly paced."
On top of this, regular moviegoers haven't shown much love for the reboot either. It has received a B- CinemaScore, placing it in the same league as other underperforming films such as "Dark Phoenix", "Hellboy", and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". The reception is particularly disheartening given the backlash faced since the project's announcement.
Director Rupert Sanders, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, attempted to address the ongoing criticism. "I think a lot of people are very active online and not so active in life," he remarked, encouraging viewers to "get out and do something and have less time throwing stones."
Sanders went on to explain, "I think it would be great just for people to know that this is a reimagining and wildly different from the original and that the original's still there. I haven't recorded over anyone's VHS. You can still go and see that movie, and I hope this movie resonates with people who loved that movie when they were in their teens. This is my version of that text. It was my adaptation of James's graphic novel, which I loved."
Despite Sanders' defense and clarification, many fans remain unconvinced. The negative reception has cast a shadow over the film's release, reminiscent of other polarizing reboots and adaptations.
Despite the lackluster reception, "The Crow" boasts a notable cast. Bill Skarsgard stars as Eric, taking on the role made famous by Brandon Lee in the 1994 cult classic. FKA Twigs plays Shelly, Eric's ill-fated love, supported by a cast that includes Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, and Sami Bouajila.
Produced by Edward R. Pressman, Samuel Hadida, Victor Hadida, John Jencks, and Molly Hassell, the film features a script by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider. Despite their efforts, the reception suggests that "The Crow" has yet to find its wings among a new generation of moviegoers.
"The Crow" is now playing in theaters, inviting curious viewers to see for themselves whether this reimagining lives up to its controversial hype.
