AceShowbiz - John Legend appeared unfazed by criticisms over his recent performance. Despite being criticized by many, the "All of Me" hitmaker gushed over his Prince tribute at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
On Thursday, August 22, the 45-year-old singer talked about his unforgettable experience performing at the DNC. In the caption of his new Instagram post, he wrote, "We had a TIME last night. It was so electrifying to be on that stage, honoring our musical hero @prince and helping to introduce the wonderful Governor of his home state."
John went on to voice his appreciation to longtime Prince collaborator Sheila E. and guitarist Ari O'Neal, "Thank you to the superwomen who joined me and lit the stage on! Queen @sheilaedrummer and the phenomenal @_arioneal! Sheila's from VP Harris's hometown of Oakland and Ari's from the home of the White House, Washington DC. Makes perfect sense to me!"
John continued, "Thank you to my visionary brother @jemelmcwilliams for creative directing. Thank you to the legendary @rickeyminor and all the incredible musicians and dancers who joined us on stage. And thanks to everyone in the audience who danced and sang along. We felt all of your energy and it was thrilling!"
Near the end of the caption, John concluded, "A lot of work to do between now and November but it's nice when it can be this much fun and full of JOY! LET'S GOOOOO!" In the same post, he treated his followers to a video from his performance.
In the short clip, it could be seen that John was onstage with Sheila and Ari to deliver Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" at the event, which took place at the United Center in Chicago on Wednesday night, August 21. While the talented women were playing their own instruments, the singer showed his skills in singing.
Following the performance, many social media users complained about John being chosen as the artist to sing Prince's song. One in particular stated, "The worst thing about the #DNC convention last night was John Legend. He didn't have no business touching a Prince song." Another said, "The DNC could've tapped Durand to cover that Prince song. No shade to John Legend at all," seemingly referring to Durand Bernarr.
Meanwhile, a third asked, "Who the hell decided that John Legend was the perfect pick to perform Let's Go Crazy? Don't do that s**t again. Sheila E and that guitarist alone was fire! #DNC." A fourth argued that John "can't hit the notes" and "has no vibes," calling the tribute "an insult to Prince's legacy."
