AceShowbiz - Netflix has officially given a greenlight to a new "Ghostbusters" animated series. The untitled show, in development since 2022, will be produced by Ghost Corps, Inc., the Sony-based company headed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman.
Elliott Kalan, a four-time Emmy winner and former headwriter for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Reitman and Gil Kenan, who co-wrote and directed "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire", respectively, are also executive producing the series.
Plot details remain confidential, but sources indicate the show will share a similar tone to the recent live-action "Ghostbusters" films. The cast and characters are yet to be announced, leaving it unclear if the series will focus on the Spengler family from "Afterlife" and "Frozen Empire" or other members of the Ghostbusters franchise.
This marks the third animated "Ghostbusters" series, following "The Real Ghostbusters" (1986-1991) and "Extreme Ghostbusters" (1997). "The Real Ghostbusters" played a crucial role in popularizing the franchise, introducing the characters and world of Ghostbusters to a generation of kids.
Netflix's "Ghostbusters" series aims to recapture the magic of its animated predecessor. Kalan's experience in comedy and his successful work on projects like Mystery Science Theater 3000 and HouseBroken make him well-suited to lead the project.
The new animated series joins a growing list of Ghostbusters content in development. A sequel to "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", directed by Gil Kenan, is currently in the works, along with a live-action TV series for Apple TV+ and a video game from Illfonic.
The "Ghostbusters" franchise continues to captivate audiences of all ages. The new animated series on Netflix promises to offer a fresh take on the beloved characters and world of Ghostbusters, bringing excitement and adventure to a new generation of fans.
