AceShowbiz - Ne-Yo, born Shaffer Chimere Smith, experienced a momentous occasion on August 7 during his "Human Love Rebellion" residency at the Encore Theatre in Wynn Las Vegas. The proud representative of Sin City, despite his Camden, Arkansas roots, was surprised on stage by Mayor Carolyn Goodman who presented him with the Key to the City and declared August 7 as Ne-Yo Day.
The Grammy-winning artist, known for hits like "So Sick" and "Because of You", received this honor due to his significant contributions to both the music industry and the Las Vegas community. Mayor Goodman, addressing the emotionally moved singer, emphasized the distinctive significance of his key by stating, "Yours has extra jewels [compared] to the one we gave Usher two months ago. You're homegrown, my dear man ... Congratulations!"
Ne-Yo, donning a stylish leopard-print suit, fought back tears as the crowd chanted his name. "I don't want to get emotional, I'm trying to be fly. I can't cry in this suit. Thank you to our lovely mayor, thank you to the city of Las Vegas, thank you all for being here." His philanthropic efforts, including work with the local Boys & Girls Club, were also acknowledged as part of the celebrations.
In addition to his accolades, Ne-Yo's recent endeavors as an independent artist mark a new chapter in his career. Having released "2 Million Secrets" in June, his first single post-Def Jam and Motown, Ne-Yo is fervently embracing this new phase. "It's a blessing to be in this position to control my own destiny as an independent artist," he shared. "My artistry means everything to me, and I'm excited to embrace this new beginning."
The residency itself showcases Ne-Yo's extensive discography, including performances of "Miss Independent" and "Take a Bow", the latter penned for Rihanna. Fans who attended the shows on August 9 and 10 were treated to the full spectrum of his multi-platinum hits.
