AceShowbiz - Chet Hanks, the eldest son of Hollywood icons Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, has opened up about his past drug addiction and its devastating effects on his life and his parents.
At the height of his addiction, Hanks compared himself to Al Pacino's Tony Montana from "Scarface". He admitted to having a severe cocaine addiction, stating, "I'm a f**king cokehead, straight up."
Hanks' addiction took a toll on his health, causing him to "wither away" due to lack of sleep and nutrition. In 2008, his parents intervened and sent him to a "wilderness camp" in Southern Utah to address his addiction issues.
Hanks expressed no ill will towards his parents for their intervention, acknowledging that they had been concerned about his drastic change in behavior. He described himself as a "really good, innocent kid" who had suddenly begun experimenting with drugs and alcohol.
In 2015, Hanks checked into rehab for his crack addiction. He has been sober for almost two years and shared on Instagram in 2022, "The decision was final. Never going back to that. Ever. This is just the beginning. Today can be the day that changes your life forever."
Hanks believes his struggles with addiction stemmed from his lifestyle in the public eye and his difficulty fitting in and following in his famous father's footsteps. Tom Hanks has been supportive of his son's recovery, stating that he supports him "every step of the way."
