Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan have apparently severed ties with their former mentor on social media after he revealed his desire to obtain the rights to the boyband's name.

AceShowbiz - In a recent interview on Steven Bartlett's "Diary of A CEO" podcast, Simon Cowell, the music mogul who created One Direction, revealed that he regretted letting the band own their name.

According to Cowell, this decision has prevented him from continuing the band's legacy after their indefinite hiatus. This revelation has led to a significant fallout with Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, evidenced by the stars unfollowing Cowell on Instagram and Twitter.

"The one thing I regret is I should have owned the name," said Cowell during the podcast. "That's the problem, could have made an animation or whatever but when you give an artist the name, it's not yours, and that's my only regret."

One Direction, comprised of Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, was formed on the popular ITV talent show "The X Factor" in 2010. Despite finishing in third place, Cowell signed them to his Syco Records label, and they went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, selling over 70 million records worldwide.

The band experienced massive success but faced internal challenges, leading to Zayn Malik's departure in 2015 and the group's official hiatus in 2016. Despite the break, the band members still own the rights to the One Direction name, which continues to generate significant profits. Reports indicate that approximately £2.9 million remains in their joint company account.

Cowell's recent comments have clearly struck a nerve with Tomlinson and Horan. In his interview, Cowell even made an open offer to buy the name back from the band members, "If you're listening, I'll buy it back from you. If one of the band members, for whatever reason, says they don't want to tour, it can stop the others touring, so if it was me who owned the name, it wouldn't be a problem."

While Cowell has hinted at loyalty from Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson in the past, this latest development suggests that the relationship has soured. Liam Payne has previously indicated the pressures of their career, admitting to being "definitely overworked" and having "no personal life."

Amidst this fallout, Cowell has announced plans for a global talent search to form a new boy band, indicating lessons learned from his experience with One Direction. Nevertheless, the recent unfollowing spree by Tomlinson and Horan shows lingering tensions and unresolved issues.
