AceShowbiz - Nicole Kidman has opened up about the profound emotional impact of portraying dark characters, particularly her role as Celeste Wright in the HBO series "Big Little Lies". During The Hollywood Reporter's roundtable discussion, she shared an incident that occurred after a particularly intense day on set.
Kidman recalled throwing a rock through a door out of pent-up frustration. She had never acted so aggressively before. "I obviously had a lot pent up," Kidman said. "I broke the whole thing. It cost a fortune."
The incident prompted her to confide in her "Big Little Lies" co-star Alexander Skarsgard and season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallee. "I said, 'I threw a rock through the window,' and they were like, 'Whoa...' " Kidman said.
Despite the emotional toll, Kidman acknowledges the importance of compartmentalizing work and home life. "There's a way in which we operate where the show must go on," she said. "You keep going - you show up and you do it and do it and do it and do it."
Recognizing the potential damage to actors' psyches, Kidman emphasizes the need for self-care. "After "Expats", I went and did a comedy because I went crazy with my own psychology," she said. "It's something we need to talk about as actors - protecting your body so that you can live for as long as you are given on this earth. Because it's very tough on the psyche."
Other actresses in the discussion, including Jennifer Aniston, Naomi Watts and SofĂa Vergara, echoed Kidman's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of balancing heavy roles with lighter material. As Vergara stated, "The body doesn't know that what you're going through [isn't real]."
Kidman's comments come as she prepares for a potential third season of "Big Little Lies". She recently teased the possibility at an undisclosed fan event. "We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI," she said.
