The director behind the last two 'Godzilla x Kong' films will not return for the upcoming sequel, 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire', as he pursues new creative avenues.

AceShowbiz - Adam Wingard will not direct the "Godzilla x Kong Sequel", according to sources familiar with the project. Wingard, who helmed 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" and 2024's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire", will not continue with a third installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. However, the possibility of his return in the future remains open.

Wingard's departure is reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. He is currently set to direct "Onslaught" for A24, with filming scheduled to begin this fall. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" was originally slated for a 2024 release but has since been delayed indefinitely.

Wingard leaves the franchise on a high note. "Godzilla x Kong" is poised to become the highest-grossing film in the MonsterVerse series, surpassing 2017's "Kong: Skull Island". The sequel has also performed well at the box office, with a global gross of over $564 million.

Despite Wingard's departure, the door remains open for a future return. Sources indicate that the parting of ways was amicable and stems from timing issues. The next installment of the franchise will be written by David Callaham, the original screenwriter of 2014's "Godzilla"'.

Wingard has teased his plans for a third "Godzilla x Kong" film, including delving deeper into Kong's relationship with the Hollow Earth tribe and Godzilla's mysterious backstory. While he may not be back in the director's chair for the sequel, it's possible that his ideas could still influence the franchise's future.
