AceShowbiz - Dabney Coleman, the esteemed actor best known for his roles in "9 to 5", "Tootsie", and "Yellowstone", has passed away at the age of 92. Coleman died peacefully at his Santa Monica, California, home on Thursday, May 16, 2024. The news was confirmed by his daughter, Quincy Coleman, who shared a heartfelt statement with various outlets.
"My Father, Dabney Wharton Coleman, took his last earthly breath peacefully and exquisitely in his Santa Monica home," Quincy said. "My father crafted his time here on earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity. A teacher, a hero, and a king, Dabney Coleman is a gift and blessing in life and in death as his spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones and his legacy... eternally."
Born on January 3, 1932, in Austin, Texas, Coleman's path to stardom was as eclectic as his roles. After attending the Virginia Military Institute and serving in the Army, Coleman turned his focus to acting. He made his Broadway debut in 1961 with "A Call on Kuprin" and quickly transitioned to television and film. His early TV appearances included roles on "Naked City", "The Donna Reed Show", and "I Dream of Jeannie".
However, it was the 1980 comedy classic "9 to 5" that catapulted Coleman to fame. Playing the tyrannical boss Franklin Hart, Jr., opposite Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton, he became a defining figure in the archetype of the comically villainous authority figure. This role was followed by other memorable performances in iconic films like "Tootsie" and "The Beverly Hillbillies".
