AceShowbiz - Actress and stuntwoman Carrie Bernans has to spend the beginning of 2024 nursing her injuries at a hospital. The Memphis native is still "in so much pain" as she's seriously injured following an alleged hit and run in New York City on New Year's Day.
Bernans' publicist confirms that she was struck by a driver who crashed into an outdoor dining shed at Chirp, a Peruvian restaurant in midtown Manhattan on Monday, January 1 at 1:30 A.M. The driver then backed up and rammed into another car, attempting to escape, before officers swarmed.
According to her mother, the awards-winning actress/stuntwoman was walking nearby a food stand with a friend when the man in his early 40s struck multiple vehicles. Bernans was reportedly knocked unconscious and pinned under the stand.
Her family says she has several broken bones, fractures and chipped teeth and has to undergo a surgery. She, however, is said to be in a stable condition and is expected to recover.
Sharing pictures of her daughter from the hospital, Bernans' mother Patricia Lee revealed the actress' positive attitude. "Amidst the chaos of the New Year's incident, she's holding onto an immense sense of gratitude for life itself," she wrote along with photos showing her daughter's gruesome injuries.
Bernans' mom added, "She's still in so much pain and can't answer calls at this time...She's in so much pain but healing. She was involved in a traumatic incident in NYC where a man, early 40s was trying to escape a hit and run and ran into multiple cars before hitting a food stand that her friend & her were walking near. It ended up knocking her unconscious and pended her under the stand. She was under it unaware of what was happening."
"She has a few broken bones, fractures, & chipped teeth but thanking God that she's alive," Lee continued. "Nine people were injured in his attempted escape from the hit & run, including 3 police officers. Police caught him shortly after and arrested him. Amidst the chaos of the New Year's incident, she's holding onto an immense sense of gratitude for life itself."
"This setback hasn't deterred her belief that something remarkable is still being crafted by God. Despite the injuries sustained in the collision caused by a hit-and-run in NYC, she's filled with hope and faith in the unfolding of a beautiful new chapter. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she navigate this path toward recovery and new beginnings," Lee penned, before thanking "all the first responders, police, strangers, my friend Katherine, family & friends who's helped her."
Bernans, whose work includes 2023's "The Color Purple", Marvel's "Black Panther", "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame", recently gave birth to a son, but luckily the newborn wasn't with her during the incident. Her mother said, "Her son was not there. He was safe in a warm hotel room with family."
