AceShowbiz - A man who killed Nicki Minaj's father Robert Maraj in a hit-and-run accident has finally received his jail sentence. Charles Polevich was ordered by the court to serve one year in prison.
On Wednesday morning, August 3, Charles, who was initially facing up to 11 years behind bars, was sentenced by Judge Howard Sturiun in Nassau County, New York, per TMZ. On top of that, his driver's license will be suspended for 6 months and he will pay a $5,000 fine.
Charles previously pleaded guilty to two felony charges, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting and tampering with physical evidence. The 72-year-old driver was facing a maximum of seven years in jail but the judge stood by his promise of sentencing him to one year behind bars.
In May, Nicki expressed her disappointment after it's reported that Charles would get less than a year in jail. "I'm not happy with that... one year in jail. I'm not happy with that," the "Super Bass" spitter told Newsday. Meanwhile, her mom Carol Maraj told the outlet, "I was angry, very, very angry."
"I started to shake because it brought back all the memories of that night when I was sitting in the hospital," continued Carol, who is suing Charles for $150 million in a civil lawsuit. "I'll say what I have to say at sentencing," she then promised.
Nicki's dad Robert was struck by a vehicle on Long Island on February 12, 2021 while walking northbound between Roslyn Road and Raff Avenue in Long Island. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries. He was 64 years old.
Charles initially fled the scene. Three days later, he eventually surrendered to Nassau County Police after law enforcement found the car in question with an altered appearance in a detached garage.
Nicki did not speak publicly about the incident until May 2021, when she posted a message via her official website that said her father's death had been "the most devastating loss of my life." She penned, "I find myself wanting to call him all the time. More so now that he's gone. Life is funny that way. May his soul rest in paradise. He was very loved & will be very missed."
