AceShowbiz - The 75th British Academy Film and Television Awards has handed out the prizes for the best in television of 2021. The Sunday, May 8 ceremony saw Jodie Comer and Sean Bean taking home the top awards.
Jodie, who was nominated for her work on Channel 4's "Help", nabbed the Best Leading Actress award. She successfully beat Kate Winslet ("Mare of Easttown"), Lydia West ("It's a Sin"), Denise Gough ("Too Close"), Emily Watson ("Too Close") as well as Niamh Algar ("Deceit").
During her speech, Jodie thanked Channel 4 for "believing in the script from the very beginning." The 29-year-old actress also credited her co-star Stephen Graham and screenwriter Jack Thorne for "integrity, passion and completely changing [her] view and priorities in the work [she wants] to do going forwards."
In the meantime, Sean, who starred on Jimmy McGovern's prison series "Time", won the Best Leading Actor award. He defeated Stephen ("Help"), Hugh Quarshie ("Stephen"), David Thewlis ("Landscapers"), Olly Alexander ("It's a Sin") and Samuel Adewunmi ("You Don't Know Me").
"Help" took home two awards, Best Leading Actress for Jodie and Best Supporting Actress which went to Cathy Tyson. In the meantime, "It's a Sin", which went into the evening with six nominations, including five in the performances categories, left without any gongs.
"Sex Education" also left the ceremony empty-handed, missing out on its two nominations, so did "We Are Lady Parts". Instead, victories were distributed across the board, with shows including "Motherland", "Alma's Not Normal" and "Stath Lets Flats" picking up wins.
Steve McQueen, who missed out on a BAFTA for his acclaimed series "Small Axe" in 2021, did claim an award for the documentary series "Uprising", which he made alongside James Rogan. Meanwhile, writer Dennis Kelly won the Best Single Drama award for "Together".
The evening also saw Matthew Macfadyen accepting his Best Supporting Actor award for "Succession" as well as Billy Connelly being awarded the BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy's highest honor. In a recorded acceptance video, the Scottish icon reflected on his 50 years in comedy. He also shared how he was suffering "badly" from Parkinson's Disease.
Held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the event was hosted by Richard Ayoade. During his opening monologue, the 44-year-old actor/comedian joked about Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap. "Bafta is celebrating 75 years at the heart of our industry," he told the audience, "In 1955, there were only six categories. Barely enough time to get up from your seat and slap someone before the whole ceremony would be over."
