The third solo Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland surpasses the James Cameron-directed pic as the sixth highest-grossing movie in history at the domestic box office.

AceShowbiz - "Spider-Man: No Way Home" continues to prove that, against all odds, a Marvel superhero film remains a box office staple. The movie has scored another feat as it maintains its top spot on the North American box office for a four straight week.

The third solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland has bagged an estimated $33 million on its fourth weekend, bringing its total domestic gross to $668 million so far. It currently stands as the sixth highest-grossing movie in history at the domestic box office, surpassing "Titanic" ($659 million) and "Jurassic World" ($652 million).

With its steady and solid performance, "No Way Home" is expected to take over the No. 5 spot from "Avengers: Infinity War" ($678 million) and "Black Panther" ($700 million) in no time.

Globally, the Sony Pictures film has amassed a massive $1.53 billion across the international market, making it the eighth-highest grossing movie worldwide. It has surpassed "The Avengers" ($1.518 billion), "Furious 7" ($1.515 billion), "Frozen II" ($1.45 billion) and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($1.4 billion).

Amid an expected quiet month at the box office this January, Comscore's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian says the latest Spider-Man movie has been a "beacon of hope" for the industry. "It shows that audiences want to go back to the movie theater," he weighs in. "We could end up having a really strong box office year."

Meanwhile, newcomer "The 355" has failed to make a splash at the box office on its debut weekend. The female-led spy movie enters the domestic chart at No. 3 with an estimated $4.8 million despite its star-studded cast, which includes Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, Diane Kruger and Lupita Nyong'o.

"Sing 2" remains solid at No. 2, adding an estimated $11.9 million on its second weekend. "The King's Man" is pushed one spot to No. 4 with approximately $3.3 million, while "American Underdog" rounds out the top five with an estimated $2.4 million.

With the spike of Omicron cases across the country, Sony has pushed back its next big release "Morbius" from January to April. "There's a bit of uncertainty in the marketplace because of the omicron variant," Dergarabedian says of the studio's decision. "Studios want to protect their crown jewels and give them the greatest shot at success in movie theaters. A delay like that shows they're not giving up on the theaters. But studios are very aware of this marketplace and what the challenges might be."
