The international film festival at Cannes, France was recently shut down after a suspicious package was found outside the venue before it was destroyed by bomb squad officials.

AceShowbiz - Cannes Film Festival bosses shut down the Palais des Festivals on Thursday afternoon (15Jul21) amid a bomb scare.

The area was evacuated by bomb squad officials who destroyed a suspicious package outside and the festival quickly returned to normal and red carpet events went on as planned.

The only thing impacted by the drama was a photocall, which was cancelled.

The 10-day festival, which opened with the world premiere of Marion Cotillard and Adam Driver's musical "Annette", ends on Saturday evening (17Jul21).

Jonas Carpignano's "A Chiara" and "Les Magnetiques" by Vincent Mael Cardona have scored the first big wins at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

"A Chiara" has scooped the Europa Cinemas Cannes Label for Best European Film while Cardona's directorial debut has landed the SACD Prize awarded by the French Writers' Guild. He was also a co-writer of the film.

Honouring Carpignano with his second Best European Film honour on Thursday (15Jul21), the Cannes jury members said his family drama "reflects a genre that has been extensively covered in cinema but this time from a new perspective."

"This story of the gradual empowerment of the young female character and her relationship with her father and her extended family is brilliantly structured and built," the jury members state.

This year's jury is headed by Spike Lee while Honorary Palme D'or is awarded to actress Jodie Foster and Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio.
