In addition to super strength and speed and echolocation ability, Leto's titular character develops 'an overpowering urge to consume blood' after an attempt to cure a rare blood disease.

AceShowbiz - Sony Pictures Entertainment has unleashed the first teaser trailer for its upcoming potential blockbuster "Morbius", sharing first footage from the movie. The video opens with a look at young Michael Morbius, who is bullied by his peers because of his condition.

Grown up to become a doctor (Jared Leto), he is encouraged by his mentor (Jared Harris) to find a cure for his rare blood disease. After seen doing some experiment in the lab, he infects himself with a strain of vampirism in an attempt to cure the disease.

He's later seen being isolated in a glass wall and being surrounded by bats, before later turning out to be stronger than ever. He shows off his super speed and strength as well as his echolocation ability, but notes a downside as he says that he develops "an overpowering urge to consume blood."

Towards the end of the video, Leto's titular character is fully transformed into a vampire. The teaser trailer additionally features a glimpse of Matt Smith as the supposed villain Loxias Crown a.k.a. Hunger, and teases the movie's connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with an appearance of Michael Keaton who reprises his "Spider-Man: Homecoming" role as Adrian Toomes a.k.a. Vulture.

According to the official synopsis, "One of Marvel's most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease."

Adria Arjona stars as Martine Bancroft, Morbius's fiancee, Tyrese Gibson portrays Simon Stroud, an FBI agent tasked with hunting down Morbius, and Al Madrigal takes the role of Alberto Rodriguez, Stroud's FBI partner. Daniel Espinosa serves behind the lens, with Matt Tolmach, Avi Arad and Lucas Foster as producers.

The superhero film is due out July 31 in the United States.
