The image depicted a topless Simon looking noticeably thinner and leaner and sporting a new six-pack, but the star told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper at MCM Comic Con in London on Sunday, October 27 his wife Maureen wasn't totally on board with his extreme transformation.

"I did have to get very, very skinny for a job I did this year and my wife was in tears about that, because I kind of got down to just skin and bone, so she wasn't happy about that," he confessed.

The "Shaun of the Dead" star went on to explain he's not one for embracing the life of a method actor, unlike a number of his contemporaries, adding his wife of 14 years "always grounds me".

"She stops me from being a head-in-the-clouds actor p**ck," Simon, 49, laughed. "As soon as I get home I'm picking up the dog s**t in the courtyard, though I do have a courtyard which is p**ckish, to say the least."
