The Edward Cullen of the 'Twilight Saga' movie series admits that he doesn't understand why he landed the lead role in the upcoming Caped Crusader film.

AceShowbiz - Robert Pattinson still can't get his head around his casting as Batman.

The actor will appear as the iconic DC Comics superhero in the upcoming movie "The Batman", taking over from Ben Affleck, who occupied the role in three movies from 2016 to 2017.

While the star, 33, is thrilled by his casting, he's admitted he still "doesn't understand" why he was picked at all, telling Esquire magazine: "It's kind of insane."

"I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect," he continued. "I literally do not understand how I've got it, at all."

However, he went on to insist he's up for the challenge, and recalled that, when he landed the leading role of Edward Cullen in the "Twilight Saga" back in 2008, he learned how to channel his insecurities and doubts on set.

"For a long time you're very self-conscious in the street. You're hiding a lot, so (on set) you have an excuse to be wild," he shared. "It's like being an adrenaline junkie. And also, when you don't know how to do something, why not just run headfirst into a wall?"

On his philosophy going into filming the new movie next year, he quipped: "See what happens. I haven't got any other ideas."

"The Batman" is set to hit theatres on 25 June 2021.
