In a statement accompanying the release of the song, the One Direction admits writing songs about his mom's death is both inevitable and relieving.

AceShowbiz - Louis Tomlinson has opened up about the death of his mom, Johannah Pulston Deakin, through his new song. Titled "Two of Us", the song made its way out on Thursday, March 7. It finds the One Direction member paying tribute to his late mom as he grapples with grief and strives towards hope, backed with a swell of strings, piano and booming drums.

It begins with Louis mourning over her death and wishing that he was the one who died instead of Joannah. But after recalling what she once taught him, Louis decides to focus on the positive. "So I will keep you, day and night, here until the day I die/ I'll be living one life for the two us," the British heartthrob sings on the chorus. "I know you'll be looking down, swear I'm gonna make you proud/ I'll be living one life for the two of us."

In a statement accompanying the release of the song, Louis admitted that addressing his mom's death through his music was both inevitable and relieving. "I just feel like musically, I almost needed to get this song off my chest," he said. "People say writing is a part of therapy and in a way, I feel like I'd been avoiding writing this song because I knew I only had one chance to get it right."

He continued, "I don't mean to be too soppy about it, but if 'Two of Us' can help just one person who's going through the tough time that I went through, then that would make me really happy."

Speaking to BBC, Louis was confident Joannah would have loved the song if she heard it. "She would have loved it, she was a fan of ballads," "The X Factor" U.K. judge said. "My mom wasn't about feeling sorry for herself. Again that's what gives me pride and comfort singing the chorus. It feels really liberating. ...Just had to bite the bullet and f***ing do it."

Joannah died on December 7, 2016 after a battle with Leukemia.
