AceShowbiz - Netflix's "The Crown" has its Margaret Thatcher in Gillian Anderson. The "X-Files" alum has been tapped to play the former Conservative prime minister in the upcoming season 4 of the acclaimed series centering on The Queen Elizabeth. Sunday Times was the first to break the news.
A pillar of the Conservative party, Thatcher, who is also known as Iron Lady, marked the first Britain's prime minister. Thatcher's tenure started in 1979 and ended in 1990. Her divisive tenure saw her shift from incredible popularity to overwhelming disapproval rates prior to her resignation.
Thatcher died in 2013 at the age of 87.
Anderson is the latest famous name to be added on the series. Prior to this, John Lithgow was announced as Winston Churchill. Anderson, whose credits include "Hannibal" and "The Fall", most recently appeared on "Sex Education", which premiered on Netflix last week.
Netflix has yet to confirm the casting report.
Set in the late 70s, season 4 of "The Crown" will also feature Lady Diana Spencer. It wil center on the relationship between the Queen, played by Olivia Colman, and Thatcher. They allegedly weren't exactly friends with each other as the British monarch once reportedly suggested the Queen did mocking impressions of Thatcher and referred to her as "that woman."
Season 3 and 4, which are currently being filmed back-to-back, will also star Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, a role which was played by Matt Smith in the first two seasons, Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, who was previously portrayed by Vanessa Kirby. Reportedly covering the years from 1963 to 1976, season 3 has yet to have an exact premiere date on Netflix.
