Soon after, someone posted on her Twitter account to assure everyone that "Chelsea is safe." The tweet further read, "She is on the phone with friends, thanks everyone for your concern and please give her some space."

Kelly Wright, a friend of Chelsea's who also is the communications director for her U.S. Senate bid in Maryland, says the 30-year-old transgender woman's adjustment to life outside of prison has been "extremely difficult." In January 2017, President Barack Obama commuted her sentence to nearly seven years of confinement dating from her arrest on May 27, 2010.

"I have seen firsthand and up close the violence inflicted on her by years of imprisonment, solitary confinement and torture," Kelly adds. "This is made worse by the impossibly high expectations our society sets for public figures, especially on social media."

Chelsea announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the Senate election in her home state of Maryland in January this year, challenging incumbent senator Ben Cardin. When asked if Chelsea suspended her Senate campaign after the recent alarming situation, Kelly says, "Negative."
