While the 'A Wrinkle in Time' director was presented with the Excellence in Media Award, Gloria Carter received Special Recognition Award.

AceShowbiz - Ava DuVernay, Samira Wiley, and Jay-Z's mom Gloria Carter were among those picking up honors at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday, May 5. Cory Booker stepped up to present DuVernay with the Excellence in Media Award, while Alexis Bledel was on hand to salute her "The Handmaid's Tale" castmate Wiley with the Vito Russo Award.

Carter claimed the Special Recognition Award for her part in inspiring her son's "Smile" track, which celebrates his mother's sexuality. There was also a big win for "Call Me By Your Name", which picked up the gay rights group's Outstanding Film, while Halsey was named Outstanding Music Artist.

The New York portion of the GLAAD Media Awards also featured a stunning collaborative performance between Melissa Etheridge and Adam Lambert, staged to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Etheridge's breakthrough album "Yes I Am". The two singers performed a new arrangement of her song "I'm The Only One" at the ceremony.

A Los Angeles ceremony was held last month.
