Sports Illustrated Swimsuit is back with empowering shoot. In the wake of the #metoo movement, the magazine's annual issue takes "In Her Own Words" as its theme to celebrate, not just women's bodies, but their minds as well.
For the project, models Paulina Porizkova, Sailor Brinkley Cook and Robyn Lawley posed fully naked with just some "powerful words" written across their bodies. The models chose their own words which "represent them and their beliefs and their passions and their messaging," says photographer Taylor Ballantyne.
"It is a platform that allows the voice, the strength and the passion of these women to be expressed in the rawest form...on the naked body...with all the artistic and creative control left to them," the magazine explains. "We believed in, supported and encouraged them to become a canvas and share their truth."
"I'm thrilled that this movement is going on, because I feel like it's going to change things for the better," gushes Sports Illustrated editor M.J. Day.
"In a way, it's more than being naked. It's not just that you're nude, but it's also 'you're nude and you show me the way you want me to see you.' It's even more naked than naked. I wanted to say that I'm not ashamed of my body and you shouldn't be ashamed of your body, no matter what age you are," says 52-year-old model Porizkova.
Lawley shares her message, "We are women and we are human. We have stretch marks. We have rolls. We have cellulite. That's all part of our bodies. We become so obsessed with our exterior message; we give no thoughts to what’s in our heads. I just want all those girls out there to know they are so beautiful and so special."
Brinkley Cook, the 19-year-old daughter of model and actress Christie Brinkley, adds, "Having these words written all over your naked body and having that next level of exposure - I felt sexy obviously but I felt more emotional and it helped me accept myself."
Taking to her Instagram page to share her nude pic, Brinkley Cook writes in the caption, "I am a fighter. I am strong. I am romantic. I am creative. I am optimistic. I am natural. I am a work in progress, constantly evolving and learning."
