The three-time Oscar winner is tapped to portray Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Alexander Skarsgard's abusive Perry Wright.

AceShowbiz - Just when you think "Big Little Lies" can't get any more star-studded, the Golden Globes-winning HBO series has landed a Hollywood icon for its upcoming season 2. Meryl Streep has been tapped to star in the sophomore season of the critically-acclaimed series.

The three-time Oscar winner is set to play a character named Mary Louise Wright. Mary Louise is the mother-in-law of Nicole Kidman's character Celeste Wright and the mother of Alexander Skarsgard's Perry Wright.

People speculate that since Perry, the abusive husband of Celeste, was presumed dead in the first season finale, Mary Louise may come forward. The official description of Mary Louise reads, "Concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son's death, Mary Louise arrives in Monterey searching for answers."

Nicole expresses her excitement by posting on her Instagram account a photo of herself and Meryl. "Welcome to the #BigLittleLies family Miss Streep - can't wait xx," she captions the snap.

Star and producer Reese Witherspoon is also "thrilled" to have Meryl joining the star-studded cast of the series. She shares a photo of herself with "The Devil Wears Prada" star alongside a caption which reads, "Beyond thrilled to have the one, the only, Meryl Streep joining the cast of #BLL for season 2. Get ready for more wine, secrets, and #BigLittleLies. Monterey better watch out!!!"

This is indeed a rare TV appearance for Meryl. Her last major television role was miniseries "Angels in America" in 2003 for which she earned an Emmy. She also appeared in three episodes of Showtime's "Web Therapy" back in 2010. "Big Little Lies", however, won't be the only Meryl's latest TV gig. She is scheduled to star in upcoming J.J. Abrams TV project titled "The Nix".

Season 2 of "Big Little Lies" will be consisting of seven episodes with David E. Kelly once again providing the script based on a story by Liane Moriarty. Andrea Arnold, meanwhile, is taking over the directing duty from Jean-Marc Valee, who directed all seven episodes of the first season.
