Sony has unleashed the first trailer for "Sicario 2: Soldado", and it shows that things get even more intense and violent in the "Sicario" sequel. The nearly-two-minute explosive video shows the return of Benicio Del Toro as undercover operative Alejandro Gillick and Josh Brolin as CIA agent Matt Graver.

One scene shows Matt in a room full of government officials seemingly talking about how to fight the drug cartels along the United States - Mexico border. "You want to see this thing through? I'm going to have to get dirty," he tells them. Near the end of the trailer, Matt can be seen telling Alejandro that he's going to start a war. When asked "with who," Matt responds, "Everyone."

In "Sicario 2: Soldado", which is scheduled for a June 29, 2018 release in theaters across the United States, the drug war on the U.S. - Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the U.S. border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver reteams with the mercurial Alejandro.

Starring opposite Del Toro and Brolin are Isabela Moner, Matthew Modine, Catherine Keener, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Jeffrey Donovan among others. Emily Blunt, along with director of the first film, Denic Villeneuve, opted not to return. The sequel is directed by Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima, with Taylor Sheridan returning as screenwriter.

Brolin calls the film a "more severe" and "much bigger" film than its predecessor when Speaking to Entertainment Weekly. Del Toro adds that if "Sicario" was a "really hardcore straight line," this sequel "is a little more complicated." Del Toro explains with his character being thrown into a mission involving Moner's character, the daughter of a drug lord, his character reaches a moral crossroads.

He's at a point where he now "either has to follow orders or make the right decision," the actor says, "and so that's kind of where the character's stuck." He adds "the cool thing about the character is that he's got to make a decision and then the consequences will follow if he goes this way or the other way, so I would say that's the difference for the character in this movie versus the Alejandro in 'Sicario'."
