AceShowbiz - Korean music industry is losing one of its best talent. Jonghyun, the member of South Korean group SHINee, has passed away at the age of 27. He was found unconscious in a residence on Monday, December 18 at approximately 6:45 P.M. KST. Emergency responders performed CPR and he was rushed to the hospital, but he was unable to be revived and pronounced dead.
Police arrived at the scene after receiving a report filed by Jonghyun's sister, who reportedly received a final text message from her brother indicating that he would attempt suicide. The residence where Jonghyun was found unconscious was not his own home, but a place he had reserved for two nights. Police believe he died from inhaling toxic fumes as they found coal briquettes burnt on a frying pan upon arriving at the place.
His family has decided not to perform autopsy. The Seoul Gangnam Police District said, "It looks definite that the deceased has committed suicide, and the family does not want an autopsy, so we will not be performing an autopsy. We will be finishing the investigation after the questioning of the family is over."
SM Entertainment, which represents SHINee, has confirmed the sad news. They released an official statement which read, "We're sorry to deliver such heart-aching, unfortunate news. On December 18, SHINee member Jonghyun left our side unexpectedly. He was found unconscious at a residential hotel in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul and was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on the evening of the 18th."
"The deep sorrow cannot be compared to ones of his family who had to let go of their loving son and brother but the employees and artists of SM Entertainment, also in deep shock and sorrow, are offering condolences," the statement continued. "Jonghyun was the best artist who loved music more than anyone and always worked hard for his performance."
"It is devastating to deliver such sad news to the fans who gave him great love. We ask you to refrain from making rumors or assumption based reports in respect of his family who are in deep sorrow from the sudden news. As his family wished, his funeral will be carried out in the quietest manner with his family members and co-workers. Once again, we offer our deepest condolence," the statement concluded.
Following the death of Jonghyun, whose real name is Kim Jong Hyun, fellow Korean stars have paid tribute to the "She Is" singer. Jun.K of 2PM tweeted, "My heart aches so bad. There must've been so many concerns and pain behind the brightness. Hope he rests in peace.." Another 2PM member, Nichkhun, simply wrote, "Rest in peace."
CN Blue's Lee Jong Hyun posted his photos with the late idol. Former EXO member Luhan wrote, "I can't believe it. Rest in peace. You were the best vocal."
Former EXO member Tao also posted a lengthy message to pay tribute to his fellow singer, "I can't believe it... The first time I went to Korea, the weather was very cold then. The first time I went to a broadcast station, I heard the song 'Hot Times' for the first time. It left such a beautiful memory. Because of that stage, that song, I wanted to so quickly go onto the stage myself and wanted to start practicing. Thank you for being my strength. Hyung, you were the first sunbaenim I've met in Korea. Right now my feelings are just... impossible to describe."
SM Entertainment has arranged a public mortuary in room 3 located on the first floor of Asan Medical Center Funeral Home so that fans can pay final respect to Jonghyun.
Jonghyun is known for his diverse style in music. Kim Da-hee of the Korea Times named him as one of four K-pop musicians who have distinguished themselves from the mass-produced singers in the idol industry by their "exceptional talent in songwriting, producing and dancing, plus other abilities that make them successful musicians." He released his first debut solo album "She Is" in May 2016, mainly consisting of songs written and composed by Jonghyun himself.
