AceShowbiz - "Captain Marvel" is courting Jude Law as its male lead. The two-time Academy Award-nominated actor is in negotiations to play Doctor Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers, Variety reports.
Should the deal be sealed, the British actor will star opposite Brie Larson, who is tapped to play the title character a.k.a. Carol Danvers, a superheroine based on Marvel Comics' character. An Air Force pilot, her DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection and flight.
Law, known for his roles in such films as "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999), "Cold Mountain" (2003), Stephen Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001), "Alfie" (2004), Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" (2009) and its 2011 sequel "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows", was last seen on the big screen through "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" which was directed by Guy Ritchie. He recently starred on HBO's miniseries "The Young Pope" and will play young Albus Dumbledore in upcoming "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" sequel, "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald", which is slated for a 2018 release.
"Captain Marvel" has tapped "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" actor Ben Mendelsohn as the villain, whose details are still kept under wraps. Samuel L. Jackson is set to reprise his role as a two-eyed Nick Fury.
"Half Nelson" helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are on board to direct the film, which will be set in the mid-1990s. Geneva Robertson-Dworet ("Tomb Raider") is in charge to provide the script, with Kevin Feige producing the movie. The Marvel film is set for a March 8, 2019 release in the United States.
