Celebrity

The comedienne says the fact that Cooper talked about his friendship with her while not checking in with her after the release of the controversial photo hurt her 'deeply.'

It turns out Kathy Griffin couldn't patch things up with Anderson Cooper in the aftermath of her controversial photo shoot featuring Donald Trump's decapitated head. In a new interview with New York Magazine's The Cut, the comedienne reveals her friendship with the CNN host is over following the scandal.

After the controversial photo was released online on May 30, Cooper publicly denounced Griffin, his co-host on CNN's New Year's Eve broadcast in the last few years, by tweeting, "For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate."

He later said during an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" on July 26 that he and Griffin were still friends. "Yeah, we're still friends," he said on the show. "Look, I said a lot. I said what I said. I didn't think what she said was appropriate but I wish her the best and I hope she bounces back. She's incredibly funny and a lot of people love her and I think she'll bounce back from this."

The 50-year-old silver fox earlier said a similar thing when appearing at Arizona's Comerica Theatre on June 11, "I don't want anybody's career to be destroyed because they do something unfortunate and inappropriate. Look, I wish her well and I hope she bounces back and keeps doing what she does best, which is make people laugh."

According to Griffin, four of Cooper's CNN colleagues reached out to her repeatedly in the following days to check on her and offer private support, but Cooper didn't contact her until August 10. "The fact that Cooper was telling people publicly they were friends, while not checking in with her, hurt Griffin deeply," The Cut's Yashar Ali wrote in the story.

By the time Cooper finally reached out to her in a series of text messages, Griffin said their friendship was over.

Griffin apologized hours after the beheading photo was released, but the damage had been done. She's fired from CNN's NYE coverage, which she co-hosted with Cooper for 10 years. "CNN has terminated our agreement with Kathy Griffin to appear on our New Year's Eve program," the network said at the time.

During the interview with The Cut, Griffin also revealed that Arnold Kopelson, a member of CBS's board of directors, advised her to send Trump a letter begging Trump for forgiveness and blaming her choice to take the photo on "the lies from the Left." Kopelson wrote, "If you don't do exactly what I've written, your career is over."
