A year after the early cut of "Risk" was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, the documentary from "Citizenfour" director Laura Poitras is set to premiere on Showtime this summer. Prior to the TV premiere, Showtime collaborates with Neon for a theatrical release.
"It is an exciting time to be working with Showtime and Neon," said Poitras. The Oscar-winner director continued, "Both organizations are thinking outside the box about how to bring complex stories to a wide audience. I am thrilled to team up with them on Risk."
Along with the announcement, the cable channel also debuted the movie's trailer on Sunday night, April 9 during the finale of "Homeland". The trailer displays the fear and obstacles Poitras had to face during the making of the film. "This is not the film I thought I was making," a voice, presumably Poitras', opens the trailer.
Poitras is facing allegations from the FBI of being "anti-U.S." as well as living under paranoia over her own safety. "When I got home, my apartment's door was opened. Did I forget to close it? Or are they sending me a message?" the voice continues.
Filmed for over six years, the doc follows a story of Julian Assange and his WikiLeaks, the controversial organization to publish and provide access to secret information often classified by government.
In the making of the film, Poitras was given an unprecedented access to Assange, who is currently exiled in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Poitras is said to be updating the film to extend its story from 2016 U.S. presidential campaign to the present day. During the presidential campaign, WikiLeaks released thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee.
"Risk" is produced in association with Field of Vision and First Look Media. "Mr. Robot" creator Sam Esmail serves as the executive producer.
