'Mayans MC' has tapped veteran actor Edward James Olmos to play one of the main characters.

"Sons of Anarchy" spin-off, which goes with the working title "Mayans MC", is slowly coming together. The project, which has got a pilot order from FX, has cast its first actor, Edward James Olmos, whose notable roles include that in 1988's "Stand and Deliver".

Olmos will play EZ Reyes' father, Felipe Reyes, a once-strong Mexican patriarch. After years of being crushed by bullets and hard labor, he tries hard to keep his past buried and lead his son into a lawful and righteous path. The "Battlestar Galactica" alum also appeared on ABC's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." as Robert Gonzales.

"SOA" creator Kurt Sutter, who is also co-writing the "Mayans MC" pilot, posted on Twitter regarding Olmos' casting, "Sometimes, planets align." He added, "Couldn't be more creatively and personally satisfied to have this soulful cat on board."

"Mayans MC" is set after the death of Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam), who runs the "SOA" biker group called SAMCRO, at the end of "Sons of Anarchy" finale in 2014. Jax's gang originally considers The Mayan as a rival, but eventually the two gangs work together as partners. The spin-off will focus on EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border, who struggles with his vow of vengeance against cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.

"Mayans MC" will kick off production this coming March with Kurt Sutter directing the pilot. Elgin James works with Sutter to write the pilot script. Sutter serves as executive producer, while James co-exec produces the potential series for Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Prods.
