The American Film Institute has named its top ten movies of the year. Among films, which were announced as the winners on Thursday, December 8, are Denis Villeneuve's recently-released sci-fi thriller "Arrival" starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, and Damien Chazelle's Oscar-contending musical "La La Land", which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone

Disney's box office-topping animated movie "Zootopia", which leads the nominations for the 2016 Annie Awards, is also among the winners. Other movies which are honored by the AFI include Clint Eastwood's biopic of Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger starring Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson's war drama "Hacksaw Ridge" and Chris Pine-starring western flick "Hell or High Water".

Rounding out the top ten are Casey Affleck-led movie "Manchester by the Sea", Oscar-worthy "Fences" starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, awards-season favorite "Moonlight" and Martin Scorsese's passion pic "Silence", the latest comer to the awards-season race which stars Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield. Additionally, ESPN's documentary "O.J.: Made in America" is saluted with an AFI Special Award.

The 2016 film jury was led by producer and AFI Board of Trustees Vice Chair Tom Pollock. Prizes for the winners will be handed at a luncheon on January 6, 2017 in Los Angeles.
