Universal Pictures has secured the movie rights to "Gears of War". During a livestream for the "Gears of War 4" game launching, Rod Fergusson, head of Coalition, the Microsoft development studio focused exclusively on "Gears", has confirmed that the adaptation of the tactical third-person shooter game is going into active development at Universal.

No helmer or writer has been announced, but Scott Stuber ("Ted", "Central Intelligence") and Dylan Clark ("Oblivion", "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes") will produce the upcoming big-screen adaptation through their Universal-based production company, Bluegrass Films. A release date for the film has yet to be set.

Based on the 2006-launched game, the story is set on a fictional Earth-like planet called Sera. It centers on a battle for survival between humans and a race of alien creatures known as The Locust Horde. In the game, players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad as they fight to save Sera's inhabitants.

It's not the first time "Gears of War" is being in development. Back in 2007, it was announced that New Line Cinema would bring the project to life with "Derailed" scribe Stuart Beattie on board to pen the screenplay. In 2008 , "Live Free or Die Hard" helmer Len Wiseman was set to direct before the project fell apart in 2010.
