STX Entertainment has released a new trailer for "The Space Between Us". It showcases Asa Butterfield's Gardner Elliot, a teenager born on Mars, who embarks on a "risky" mission to Earth in search for clues for his father, but his organs can't withstand Earth's atmosphere.

The over-2-minute video opens with Gardner talking online to a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa (Britt Robertson). Asked about where he "really from" is, he replies, "Mars, I was born here." She responds, "Yeah, sometimes I feel like I'm from a different planet too."

Gardner then decides to go to Earth, but his Mars-adapted body can't stay on Earth for too long. "It's too risky," says scientist Nathaniel Shepherd (Gary Oldman). One scene shows the Martian teenager asking Tulsa to help him find his father before he collapses. "It was worth it," he says at the end of the video. "All of it."

Directed by Peter Chelsom from a script written by Allan Loeb, "The Space Between Us" follows the first human born on Mars who travels to Earth for the first time, experiencing the wonders of the planet through fresh eyes. He embarks on an adventure with a street smart girl to discover how he came to be.

Also starring Carla Gugino, Trey Tucker, Janet Montgomery, B.D. Wong and Scott Takeda, the sci-fi romance is coming to U.S. theaters this year on December 16.
