Sherlock and a dog together is not something commonly seen on the BBC series, but you need to get used to since a dog will likely have a major role in the fourth season. Or, at least that what is suggested by this first official look at the new season.

In the newly released image, Benedict Cumberbatch's character appears to be kneeling as he points to something unseen and the dog next to him looks at the same direction. "The game is on," reads the tagline accompanying the photo which is posted on the official Twitter page of BBC One.

The same dog was spotted during the filming of the fourth season in London, England in April. They were joined by Martin Freeman, Amanda Abbington and a baby, who will likely be John Watson and Mary Morstan's child, at the time.

"Sherlock" season 4 is expected to premiere around Christmas in the U.K. Plot details are still kept under wraps, but Toby Jones has been announced to play the role of the villain. Rumor has it, villain Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) will make a return.

Co-creator and executive producer Steven Moffat has hinted that the upcoming season could be the last for the show, since Cumberbatch has become an internationally-renowned actor and he only does the show out of loyalty to its fans.

"I don't know how long we can keep it going. I'm personally willing but I'm hardly the main draw," Moffat says. "I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be."

Moffat and co-creator/executive producer Mark Gatiss once teased, " 'Sherlock' series four - here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax..."
