The '24' alum will star as a U.S. cabinet member who is suddenly appointed President after an attack on Washington on conspiracy thriller 'Designated Survivor'.

Kiefer Sutherland is officially back on TV with "Designated Survivor". The conspiracy thriller from David Guggenheim and starring the former Jack Bauer of FOX's "24" has received formal series order at ABC.

The project had a straight-to-series order by ABC in late 2015, but there was reportedly an out option after the pilot, which was directed by Paul McGuigan. However, the pilot has garnered positive reaction, thus cementing its series status.

Along with the series pick-up, a teaser trailer has been released. It sees Sutherland's Tom Kirkman taking the oath of office and previews a crisis that he's facing in his new position. According to the official logline, the drama follows Kirkman, a lower cabinet member who unexpectedly becomes president after a devastating attack on Washington. He will struggle to prevent the country and his own family from falling into chaos, as he is thrust into one of the most difficult presidencies in history.

Natascha McElhone, Maggie Q, Kal Penn, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett and Tanner Buchanan join the cast in supporting roles. Jon Harmon Feldman is reportedly in talks to be a showrunner, replacing Amy Harris. Guggenheim will executive produce the series along with Simon Kinberg, Mark Gordon, Nick Pepper, Suzan Bymel and Aditya Sood.

"Designated Survivor" is set to be launched this fall.
