The 'Titanic' actress recalls she was told by her drama teacher she would 'only get a chance to play the cute, fat best friend role or the ugly sister parts.'

AceShowbiz - Kate Winslet's drama teacher may want to take his/her words back now. The actress, who recently won a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award for her role in "Steve Jobs", said backstage of the BAFTA Awards on Sunday, February 14 that her drama teacher once criticized her for her looks as a teenager.

"When I was younger, when I was only 14, I was told by a drama teacher that I might do okay if I was happy to settle for the fat girl parts," she told reporters when speaking of her win that night. "Look at me now! Look at me now."

Encouraging young women around the world to "keep believing" in themselves, she added, "So what I feel like saying in those moments is, to any young woman who has ever been put down by a teacher or a friend or even a parent, just don't listen to any of it. Because that's what I did. I didn't listen, and I kept on going, and I overcame all of my fears, and I got over a lot of insecurity. And just keep doing it, and keep believing in yourself."

Thus, she dedicated her BAFTA win to "all those young women who doubt themselves - because you shouldn't be doubting. You should just be going for it."

Kate, who also won an Academy Award for her role in 2008's film "The Reader", shared a similar story to PEOPLE. She recalled she was told "by a drama teacher that if I continued to be overweight I would really only get a chance to play the cute, fat best friend role or the ugly sister parts. I remember thinking, 'Oh, you're so wrong!' That kind of spurred me on."

But there were times when teen Kate considered giving up acting. "I was always the kid at the end of the line because my name began with W, and I always had big feet, and I was always wearing the wrong thing," she admitted. "I remember having a moment where I thought to myself, 'This is so stupid. This is just a waste of my train fare getting myself into London for auditions.' I remember thinking to myself, 'You've just got to keep going for it.' "

The 40-year-old British beauty has a chance to win her second Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Joanna Hoffman, marketing executive for Apple, when the ceremony is held on February 28.
