"High School Musical" became a phenomenon when it was released in 2006 and now the cast reunited for a special telecast to celebrate the movie's 10th anniversary. Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman appeared in the pre-taped special without Zac Efron who was not present during the taping because it conflicted with promotion of his movie "Dirty Grandpa".
The stars shared their memories from the set and unsealed their audition tapes from 2005. Ashley and Lucas' screen test was shown first. "Do you remember, we ran through this scene and this girl gives me notes!" Lucas said after watching the clip. Ashley responded, "I embraced the character!"
Vanessa and Zac's audition was played next. Everyone could see how the sweet Vanessa was perfect for the role of Gabriella Montez. Her chemistry with Zac was also present from the very beginning. "Remember in Kindergarten, how you'd meet a kid and know absolutely nothing about them and yet 10 seconds later, you're playing like you're best friends because you didn't have to be anything but yourself?" she said. "Singing with you felt like that."
Monique and Corbin's audition clip was hilarious. Monique said she thought she wouldn't get the role because her hair was similar to Corbin's. The two co-stars couldn't help laughing after watching the audition tape.
Zac, meanwhile, appeared in a taped message. "Hey guys, I'm so sorry that I couldn't be there in person but I'm with you all in spirit," he said. "My favorite scene in the movie has to be 'We're All in This Together'. The unity, the whole cast in that moment was just really, really fun."
He continued, "I'll never forget that day. It's embedded in my mind as one of the most beautiful days of my entire life. Thank you for being a part of this huge 'High School Musical' extravaganza. It's become the coolest thing that I've ever been a part of."
Reflecting on their sudden fame after starring in the TV movie, Monique said, "People always say did you know it was going to be as big as it became? Absolutely not but did we know we were a part of something special? Absolutely."
