The '24' alum is cast as a reluctant POTUS on 'Designated Survivor', which has received a straight-to-series order from the network.

AceShowbiz - Kiefer Sutherland is heading to the White House. The actor is returning to the small screen with a role as a president on ABC's conspiracy thriller "Designated Survivor" from David Guggenheim.

In the drama, Sutherland will play "a lower level United States Cabinet member," who "is suddenly appointed President after a catastrophic attack during the State of the Union kills everyone above him in the Presidential line of succession." Deadline describes the project as "a family drama wrapped around a conspiracy thriller about an ordinary man in an extraordinary situation."

The drama has received a straight-to-series order from the network for the 2016-2017 season, but no episode count and premiere date have been announced. The script sparked a major bidding war before landing on the Alphabet.

Guggenheim will executive produce the series along with Simon Kinberg, Sutherland and Entertainment 360's Suzan Bymel. The project hails from the Mark Gordon Company and marks the banner's first series pickup since it went independent earlier this year, backed by Entertainment One.

Sutherland reprised his "24" role as Jack Bauer on limited series "24: Live Another Day" last year. He also headlined FOX's drama thriller "Touch" which ran for two seasons from 2012-2013.
