The 'Bridge of Spies' director says, 'There will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western.'

AceShowbiz - Steven Spielberg believes superhero movies won't last forever. Speaking to The Associated Press during the press tour of his Cold War movie "Bridge of Spies" starring Tom Hanks, the veteran director/producer predicts the genre will die like the Westerns.

"We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western. It doesn't mean there won't be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns," so Spielberg says.

"Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I'm only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture. There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us."

According to Marvel's and Warner Brothers' plans, comic book movies will be around until 2020. Fox is also in the superhero game although their latest take on "The Fantastic Four" tanked at the box office. "Three or four or maybe even a half-dozen mega-budget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm," Spielberg said once before.

Another Hollywood star who is tired of the superhero trend is Emma Thompson. She told Vulture, "I loved the original Superman with Chris Reeve because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it, [but] after a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it. The fact that I know they're going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies."

The actress added, "If I see yet another Spider-Man, I'm going to have to actually hang myself. I can't do it anymore! Theyre all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?"
