Amazon is eying to release the controversial 'Chicago-Iraq' movie in December for a qualifying run ahead of awards season.

AceShowbiz - Amazon is pushing "Chiraq" for awards season. The movie was initially planned to premiere at 2016 Cannes Film Festival but the studio is now hoping to debut the Spike Lee-directed film in December in order to qualify for awards like Oscars.

No exact release date is announced. Amazon's head Roy Price and his movie production chief, Ted Hope, told The Hollywood Reporter that the 'Chicago-Iraq' movie would play first in theaters before being available quickly to Amazon Prime customers.

"We couldn't have come up with a better film to launch our division in every which way. Chi-Raq makes no apologies and dares to shock," Hope said in a statement. "Spike Lee is one of the most distinct and visionary filmmakers of our time."

The movie stars Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, and Samuel L. Jackson. It is expected to address the real issues in Chicago's most violent neighborhoods often compared to the warzone in Iraq.
