Pitt will star in the satirical comedy about the war in Afghanistan directed by 'Animal Kingdom' helmer David Michod.

AceShowbiz - Netflix continues to aim big with its original contents. The streaming service has nabbed distribution rights to "War Machine", a satirical comedy starring Brad Pitt and directed by David Michod ("Animal Kingdom"). It marks the biggest film acquisition to date for the streaming giant.

Based on Michael Hastings' bestselling book "The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan", the film centers on Gen. Stanley McChrystal, a four-star U.S. military general determined to win the "impossible" war in Afghanistan. Michod also writes the script, while Pitt will produce the film with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, along with Ian Bryce.

"We are so excited to be a part of the inspiring commitment by Netflix to produce cutting-edge content and to deliver it to a global audience," Pitt said in a statement. Michod added, "I'm humbled to be making a big, bold movie about the whole sprawling, complex, cumbersome and crazy machinery of modern war and the many lives it touches."

Netflix COO Ted Sarandos commented on the film, " 'War Machine' is a rip-roaring, behind-the-facade tale of modern war decision-makers, from the corridors of power to the distant regions of America's ambitions. Brad and David are a perfect team to make this timely, compelling and entertaining film."

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in August. The movie will be released in theaters and available on Netflix in 2016.
