'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Sequel May Continue Without David Fincher
Movie

Sony reportedly plans to combine the second and the third books into one movie and then wrap up the saga with the upcoming fourth book.

A sequel to "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)" may still happen even though Rooney Mara previously suggested the project was dead. Sony reportedly has a new plan to continue the saga with significantly less money that may not involve David Fincher who made the first film on a $90 million budget.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio wants to make a sequel based on the second and the third books, "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest". The series is later going to be closed with an adaptation of the brand new book "The Girl in the Spider's Web".

However, Amy Pascal, who is leaving her post as Sony's head to become a producer for the studio, is not too thrilled with the plan because combining the two novels will cause them to scrap the "Girl Who Played with Fire" script previously written by Steve Zaillian, which has cost the studio mid-seven figures.

The renewed interest in the franchise comes after the fourth book was announced. Although continuing Stieg Larsson's Millennium series about a tattooed computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, the new novel is actually written by a different author, David Lagercrantz. It will be available for purchase on September 1.

The first film starred Mara as Lisbeth and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist respectively. It's unclear if the two will reprise their roles in any of the sequels. Mara is currently attached to play Tiger Lily in the Peter Pan movie "Pan", and Craig is filming the new James Bond flick "Spectre".
