Missy Elliott did come as one of Katy Perry's special guests during her headlining set at the Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday night, February 1. One of the biggest hip-hop superstars in the '90s and early 2000s, the raptress who's been on lengthy hiatus joined the pop diva to perform three of her hits including "Get Ur Freak on", "Work It" and "Lose Control".
However, numerous people, especially the young ones, admitted that they had no idea who Elliott was. On social media, they said the 43-year-old performer would be a big star now thanks to her appearance with Perry.
"Katy Perry is gonna make this Missy Elliot girl blow up," a Facebook user wrote. A Twitter user similarly wrote, "Who is this Missy Elliott? Katy Perry is about to make her famous."
Elliott then reacted to the comments, taking to her own Twitter account and saying she's totally fine with people not knowing who she was. "The new kids think I'm a new artist &I'm bout 2blow up... like Paul McCartney Lord ha mercy chile I love me sum y'all," she wrote. "I think it's cool new kids think I'm a new artist that goes to show u that I'm still on & will rip down stages 20 yrs later."
She went on urging them to check out her music. "If u not familiar with my music check out some of my videos they r pretty cool 2 then head 2 iTunes U won't be disappointed," she continued.
Elliott's Super Bowl performance didn't only earn her new fans. According to Spotify, between the hour before the game and midnight last night, streams of Elliott's music increased by a whopping 676|percent|. Billboard additionally reports that her catalog of songs could earn a sales increase of around 1,000|percent|, jumping to around 70,000 downloads sold.
