The culprit behind the leak of Madonna's "Rebel Heart" music has been arrested. Israeli police and cyber crime unit Lahav 433 confirm that a 39-year-old Israeli man, who has been named a suspect in the case, was arrested in Tel Aviv.
The man is believed to have broken "into the personal computers of several international artists over the past few months and stole promotional final-cut singles which have yet to be released and traded them online for a fee...In light of the findings of the investigation the unit collaborated closely with the FBI, with suspicion of even more break-ins to computers owned by unknown international artists, stealing and selling their works."
The authorities also have evidence that the man hacked Madonna's personal computers and then sold "Rebel Heart" songs to a third party. The suspect has not been identified, but Israeli media is reporting that he was a contestant on one of singing competitions in the country.
Following the arrest, Madonna released a statement via Facebook. "I am profoundly grateful to the FBI, the Israeli Police investigators and anyone else who helped lead to the arrest of this hacker. I deeply appreciate my fans who have provided us with pertinent information and continue to do so regarding leaks of my music," she wrote.
"Like any citizen, I have the right to privacy. This invasion into my life - creatively, professionally, and personally remains a deeply devastating and hurtful experience, as it must be for all artists who are victims of this type of crime."
Madonna contacted a private firm to help track down the hacker. Tel Aviv investigator Asher Wizman told Reuters, "Our investigator found her computers, at home and at a studio, were broken into from a computer in Israel. We tracked down the computer, and the man behind it. After gathering enough evidence, we turned to the police and he was arrested today."
Madge was enraged after some songs from her upcoming "Rebel Heart" alum were leaked late last year. She posted a picture of a smashed iPod on Instagram on Thursday, December 4, writing along with it, "This broken ipod is a symbol of my broken heart! That my music has been stolen and leaked! I have been violated as a human and an artist! #f**kedups**t."
Following the leak, the 56-year-old singer released six finished versions of the album's tracks earlier than the plan. "I was hoping to release my new single 'Living for Love' on Valentine's Day with the rest of the album coming in the spring," she said in late December. "I would prefer my fans to hear completed versions of some of the songs instead of the incomplete tracks that are circulating. Please consider these six songs as an early Christmas gift."
