George Lucas could've directed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". The man behind the popular sci-fi film franchise confirms he was planning a new trilogy before selling Lucasfilm to Disney. He expected to release "Episode VII" in 2015, but when Disney came with a $4.06 billion plan to acquire the company, he agreed to sell it.

In an interview with USA Today, the filmmaker reveals his little daughter was one of the reasons he stepped away from the company which he started in the 1970s. "It's better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself. The time is more important to me than the money," he says.

Since then, Lucas has been focusing on what he calls small "experimental" films. He also married his longtime partner Mellody Hobson in June 2013 and welcomed their daughter, Everest Hobson Lucas, via gestational carrier in August the same year.

Lucas goes on sharing his only "regret about 'Star Wars' is the fact I never got to see it - I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen." Now that he's not involved in the making of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", he plans to see it like other people. "The next one, I'll be able to enjoy it like anybody else," he says.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is directed by J.J. Abrams. The movie, which brings together the original cast including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher as well as new faces like Adam Driver and Andy Serkis, is set to open in U.S. theaters on December 18.
