'Guardians of the Galaxy' Among Nominees at Writers Guild Awards

The superhero pic is facing off other heavy contenders such as 'The Imitation Game', 'American Sniper', 'Wild' and 'Gone Girl' in Adapted Screenplay category.

AceShowbiz - The Writers Guild of America has announced the films which are vying for the screenwriting awards. On Wednesday, January 7, it was revealed that "Guardians of the Galaxy" was among the contenders, giving a nice surprise to the line-up. The superhero pic written by James Gunn and Nicole Perlman is included in Adapted Screenplay category.

The space adventure featuring Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel) and their gang is facing off serious contenders in the category. "American Sniper" which tells the story of the most lethal sniper in the U.S. military, "Gone Girl" which is adapted from a novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, Alan Turing biopic "The Imitation Game" which is based on "Alan Turing: The Enigma" by Andrew Hodges, and Reese Witherspoon-starring "Wild" with screenplay by Nick Hornby are also up for the trophy.

In Original Screenplay category, the movies which are vying for the award include "Boyhood", which was written and directed by Richard Linklater, "Foxcatcher" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel". "Nightcrawler" and "Whiplash" are also featured in the category.

Some critically-acclaimed movies are notably missing from the list. According to HitFix, "Selma", "Birdman", "The Theory of Everything" and "Mr. Turner" are not eligible for the nominations.
