The series starring Gabriel Luna failed to sell internationally, prompting the producers to overturn their decision.

El Rey Network has canceled Gabriel Luna's drama series "Matador" despite previously renewing it for a second season. The Robert Rodriguez-owned network decided not to move forward beyond the 13-episode season 1 reportedly because of soft sales in international market.

"Matador" follows a DEA agent who goes undercover for CIA as a professional soccer player. Luna starred alongside Alfred Molina, Nicky Whelan, and Neil Hopkins. Created by Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the series was hailed as a Latino take on James Bond. Rodriguez directed the pilot, which aired in July.

Producers expected the series to go well in both U.S. and overseas but despite a strong initial interest, the series failed to pick up the buzz internationally. A costly budget also prompted the producers to overturn their decision.

"Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes," El Rey said in a statement. "We want to thank everyone involved, from the extraordinarily talented cast and crew to the amazing production team. We appreciate all that they have done and look forward to the opportunity to work with them in the future."
