Miss Honduras 2014 Maria Jose Alvarado and her sister Sofia went missing just days before she was scheduled to fly to London to prepare for the Miss World Pageant. Police are now investigating into the 19-year-old pageant queen's disappearance and have detained some people to gather information related to the case.

According to The Guardian, Maria and Sofia were last seen getting into a car without license plate after attending a friend's birthday celebration in Santa Barbara, Honduras on Thursday, November 13. On Monday, police said they had detained Sofia's boyfriend Plutarco Ruiz and another man named Aris Maldonado.

"Both are being questioned as part of the investigation into the disappearance of [Maria Jose Alvarado] and her sister. We hope to establish what role they may have played," said police's spokesperson Joseph Coello.

"Nobody has asked for a ransom for their liberation and there have been no bodies found. These are strong signs that they are still alive," Inspector Vicente Reyes added in a phone interview. Reyes explained that the police would intensify patrols around Honduras and Guatemala's borders. "This is a big operation. She is a representative of the country," he said.

Maria, who was supposed to head for England on Wednesday, was crowned Miss Honduras in April. The final round for the Miss World pageant will take place on December 14.
