Martin Scorsese is working on yet another project for HBO. The "Gangs of New York" director is on board to executive a drama series, "Cortes", along with Chris Gerolmo, who also serves as the writer, actor Benicio Del Toro, Laura Bickford, Rick Yorn and Emma Tillinger Koskoff.

The Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning filmmaker is also signed to direct. The high-profile project will revolve around Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, who brought down the Aztec empire; Malinche, the Mayan girl who helped him do it; and Montezuma, the Aztec leader he befriended and finally put in chains.

Scorsese, who enjoyed success with HBO's period drama "Boardwalk Empire", has been developing "Ashecliffe", a prequel series based on his 2010 film "Shutter Island", and an untitled Rock 'n' Roll project about the drug- and sex-fueled music business in 1970s New York. Both projects are being set up at the premium cable channel.
