A "Marley & Me" TV series is in the works at NBC. The network has given a hefty put-pilot commitment to the single-camera comedy that continues the story of the Grogan family and their beloved pet.

"The Big C" and "Sex and the City" alum Jenny Bicks will write the script, while David Frankel, who directed the 2008 film, is on board to direct the pilot. The film itself was based on John Grogan's 2005 bestselling autobiographical book of the same title.

The TV sequel will pick up where the 2008 comedy movie left off. It will follow the couple, John and Jenny Grogan (played by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston in the movie), and their three kids, a 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old and 6-year-old girls, as they have just moved back to Florida so that John can take up his newspaper column once again.

However, when a stray puppy ("owned", but not well, by their neighbors) ends up on their doorstep, they are forced to adopt it. This dog, named Marley for the fact that they use Marley's old leash and tags on her, is as will-full, destructive and delightful as her original namesake. And she will help shed light not only on the growing pains of the Grogan family, but also the lives of the neighbors, and fellow dog-owners, around them.

The "Marley & Me" movie was a commercial success, raking in $242.7 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.
